I’ve Found A Friend In Jesus (The Lily Of The Valley)
1 I’ve found a friend in Jesus,— He’s everything to me;
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul!
The Lily of the Valley, in Him alone I see—
All I need to cleanse and make me fully whole;
In sorrow He’s my comfort, in trouble He’s my stay;
He tells me every care on Him to roll:
He’s the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star;
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul!
2 He all my grief has taken, and all my sorrows borne;
In temptation He’s my strong and mighty tower;
I’ve all for Him forsaken, I’ve all my idols torn
From my heart—and now He keeps me by His power.
Though all the world forsake me, and
Satan tempt me sore,
Through Jesus I shall safely reach the goal.
He’s the Lily of the Valley, the
Bright and Morning Star;
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul!
3 He’ll never, never leave me nor yet
forsake me here,
While I live by faith, and do His blessed will;
A wall of fire about me, I’ve nothing now to fear:
With His manna He my hungry soul shall fill.
When crowned at last in glory, I’ll
see His blessed face,
Where rivers of delight shall ever roll.
He’s the Lily of the Valley, the
Bright and Morning Star;
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul!

Background History And Story Behind The Hymns: I’ve Found A Friend In Jesus (The Lily Of The Valley)
The hymn I’ve Found A Friend in Jesus (The Lily of the Valley) is one of the most beloved gospel hymns of the late nineteenth century. It was written by the American evangelist and songwriter Charles William Fry in the year 1881. Fry was a dedicated member of The Salvation Army and composed the hymn during a period when the Salvation Army was rapidly expanding its evangelistic work in both the United States and Britain.
The story behind the hymn is closely connected with the evangelistic mission of the Salvation Army. Charles William Fry and his sons were active street musicians who used music as a tool for evangelism. They frequently accompanied Salvation Army workers during outdoor preaching meetings, where music helped attract crowds and communicate the Christian message in a simple and memorable way.
According to historical accounts, Fry wrote the hymn for a Salvation Army officer who was facing intense persecution because of her Christian witness. The officer had been rejected by her family and community after her conversion and commitment to Christian service. To encourage her during this difficult time, Fry wrote a song that celebrated the comforting friendship and faithfulness of Jesus Christ.
The title of the hymn draws its imagery from the Bible, particularly from the poetic book known as the Song of Solomon. In Song of Solomon chapter 2 verse 1, the beloved figure declares, “I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.” Christians have long interpreted this imagery symbolically as describing the beauty, purity, and preciousness of Christ. By calling Jesus “the Lily of the Valley,” the hymn presents Him as the most beautiful and faithful friend who stands above every earthly companion.
The lyrics of the hymn emphasise the personal relationship between the believer and Jesus Christ. They describe Him as a faithful friend who carries the believer’s burdens, removes sorrow, and provides strength in times of trial. This theme of intimate friendship with Christ made the hymn especially powerful during revival meetings and evangelistic gatherings in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Musically, the hymn follows the lively and memorable style typical of gospel songs of the period. Its cheerful melody and repetitive chorus made it easy for congregations to learn and sing. Because of this accessibility, the hymn quickly spread beyond Salvation Army circles and became widely adopted in churches across the English-speaking world.
Over time, I’ve Found A Friend in Jesus (The Lily of the Valley) has appeared in numerous hymnals and gospel song collections. It has been sung in churches, revival meetings, camp meetings, and evangelistic crusades for more than a century. The hymn remains a favourite in traditional gospel music, quartet singing, and country gospel performances.
Today the hymn continues to be cherished for its joyful testimony of the believer’s relationship with Christ. Its message reminds worshippers that Jesus is not only the Saviour and Lord, but also a faithful friend who remains constant through every trial and difficulty of life.
For generations of Christians, the hymn has served as a musical declaration of trust and devotion. Its enduring popularity testifies to the power of simple gospel music to convey profound spiritual truths about the love, faithfulness, and companionship found in Jesus Christ, the Lily of the Valley.
